These are paintings of my granddaughters. The little one was born in June 2008.

The eight-year old had been a flower girl in a wedding. After the ceremony was over, she sat down to rest and her father (my son) put his coat around her. A thought occurred to me the day after I completed this painting that I wished I could have known my own father when I was a child. He had died in a plane crash when I was only 3 years old.

I painted during the last week of October in and around Crockett for this year's Valona Paintout.

The paint out was hosted by the Epperson Gallery and Mary Lou, Linda , Leslie and I all took part.

McEwen's Jewels was painted on McEwen Road, the road that leads to Port Costa. I was attracted to the green gold and magenta's of the eucalyptus trees against the bronze and greyed out dusty greens of the hillside.

Crockett Roller Coaster was painted in town, looking up second street. It was a fun exercise , inspired by the San Francisco paintings of Wayne Thiebaud.

Illuminating Shadows/Open Studios

I painted off Cummings Skyway last Sunday on the way home from painting in a new vineyard catching Fall colors and young grapevines. Fall is a wonderful time to paint the long shadows and russet colors.

"Best Clam Chowder" - Valona Paint Out by Leslie Wilson

It was a fabulous experience to participate in the Valona Paint Out, sponsored by the Epperson Gallery. Thank you to Gerry for providing the opportunity for over 50 artists! Also, thanks to Sarah Beserra, juror, who awarded my painting First Place, "Best Clam Chowder" of The Nantucket Restaurant!! I also enjoyed painting other vibrant scenes from Crockett and meeting friendly folks who stopped and visited while I painted. It was a terrific experience to meet other artists and talk about our work. It was great to meet East Bay and Da Group artists as well as art enthusiasts who attended the reception on Sunday Nov 2nd at the Gallery. One more painting from this summer's adventures. On the way home from Oregon driving down the coast we stopped to stay a day or two in the small town of Trinadad. I was able to paint on the water and I mean right in the rising tide and do several studies of the sea. I set up my soltek easel on the beach and my husband, John helped carry the equipment down to my site. He then took off with the car to hike and search for beach aggots. I sketched my idea and proceeded to find my brushes missing still rolled up in the back of the car. Frustrated, and wanting to keep my energy I started drawing in with paint using the felt tip pen then used the pallet knife. I rarely paint with just a pallet knife. But I liked the stark effect. It turned out to be a lovely day. This painting will be at the Scene on the Straits showing and sale and festival. It measures 9 x 12" and is in oil.

High Street Bridge-oil 16x12(Alameda Paintout)

I scouted early before the paintout and found this view of the bridge. I liked the gate structure and the occasional fishing sciffs wandering downstream. A gentleman living on High Street also appreciated the view. I like this one because it is a challenge for me to paint bridges in my loose style and keep everything mechanically correct.

Painted on Park Street Alameda for the Frank Bette Plein Air Quick Draw. I painted in the city of Alameda in two hour time limit. I decided to have fun and paint the dough boy statue in front of the historic funky bakery. Another artist in front painted wedding cakes in the window. Painting won an honorable mention.

East Bay Fine Artists Show and Reception at Orinda Library Gallery

The Eastbay Fine Artists group Annual Art show will be on exhibit at the Orinda Library Gallery , April 21 through May 16. The gallery is open during regular library hours.

The show is dedicated to, and features the watercolor work of Karen Mason, a founding member, who passed away in February. Karen was well known in the art community as a former president of the California Watercolor Association, and for several years, director of the Gallery Concord.

Twelve members of the Eastbay Fine Artists will be represented in the show; all are acomplished award winning artists., most of whom paint in watercolors, while some paint in oil , acrylic and pastel.

The artists showing their work are: Mary Lou Correia, Cynthia Eastman-Roan,Geri Keary, Carol Lutz, Karen Mason, Nancy Partovi, Robin Purcell, Margo Sanger, Linda Sutton, Helen Tiernan, Alice Vollmer, Wayne White and Gail Zavala.

The public is invited to a reception at the gallery to view the paintings and meet the artisits, Sunday April 27, 2 to 4. The library is located at 26 Orinda Way, Orinda CA

Spring Tapestry

Spring Tapestry 15 X12 Painted while gallery sitting. I changed how the turquoise color patches travel up the hill so that your eye does not follow them off the page to the left. I also reworked the prominent shape I had right in the middle.

Oxalis at Wilder Ranch

Here is the small 11 x14 study I had at Critique group. I glazed over the foreground to make it darker and enhance the brightness of the yellow. I feel like I painted the obvious but I had to get it out of my system. This was painted at Wilder Ranch in Santa Cruz on a beautiful day, just down from the parking lot, looking south. Spring training for plein air continues.

Critique was at Robin's house this month. four of us showed paintings of loved ones, grandchildren or children. We agree that you paint best what you know well and love. I painted granddaughter Jesse reading one of her Warrior books on a couch by the wood burning stove at her home in Oregon. I have wanted to paint her for some time and finally she is old enough to be quiet for a while so that I could paint her. The joy is in the painting of it.

Backside of Diablo, Fall Colors 6 x 12 oil

I painted the Backside of Diablo, Fall Colors from a sketch that I did as Linda and I drove out Hwy 4 to the Hagen Museum to see the Plein Air Show. the sun was low, hitting a row of golden trees. Poplars and old oaks glistened against the backdrop of the distant mountain. Later I did a small oil painting. I used it as a demonstration for the January meeting of the California Watercolor Association. My discussion was about how to capture quick ideas in ink and my cotman watercolor set; then generate loose paintings from the sketches. Karen reviewed my ideas with me and approved before my presentation. She was always encouraging, honest and a very good friend.

Here is what the California Watercolor Association said about Karen :
We regret to inform you that Karen Mason died on Feb. 8, 2008. She was a former president of our association, active in outreach activities, and a founder of Gallery Concord. She was a pillar of our community, and will be sorely missed.
Services were held at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel at 1139 Saranap Ave, Walnut Creek, CA 94595 from 1:30-3pm on Monday, February 11th.
In lieu of flowers, her family has suggested that donations can be made to California Watercolor Association.
